Astronomical image processing from large all-sky photometric surveys for the detection and the measurement of transients

This PhD is part of a joint program among Imagine, The IN2P3 of France (Institut national de physique nucléaire et de physique des particules) and the LSST group. This project is being hosted by Uniandes and the Aix-Marseille University of Marseille, France.

The LSST will be a new telescope with a great light gathering power and capable of scanning the entire night sky every three days.  It would be capable of producing:

  • one 6.4-gigabyte image every 17 seconds
  • 15 terabytes of raw scientific image data / night
  • 60-petabyte final image data archive
  • 20-petabyte final database catalog
  • 2 million real time events per night every night for 10 years

And with that volume of data, we should be able to process the images to generate real time alerts, catalog and image data.

We are working on a image processing method to detect transient and variable objects: objects that change their intensity, their position or their shape in the images. Those transient and variable objects could be:

  • Supernovae
  • Asteroids
  • Gravitational lenses

Transients are very important to the understanding of the nature of the universe; Supernovae are crucial for the study of the expansion of the universe, helping to measure accurate distances at different times of the history of the universe.. Asteroids and their paths not only are part of research of threats to earth, but can provide interesting data about the mineral composition of the different planets in the universe.
